St Geniez d'Olt, la Ville Lumière

It is said that in the late 15th century there lived in St-Geniez a fisherman whose two children had captured a gopher. The little animal ran off scared on a stormy afternoon. The two children ran after it when a violent storm started and immersed the valley in a real deluge. On their return, several houses, including theirs had been washed away. By fleeing the little animal had saved their lives. They were nicknamed "the Marmots". By extension the name was given to all the inhabitants.

Sauveté de Rieupeyroux

The site of Rieupeyroux (rivo petroso), with the highest point (804 m) of the chapel of Modulance, the subject of an ancient legend with the giant Gargantua, is engraved in the granite and schism landscapes of Segala, where open huge platforms are interrupted by valleys with winding rivers that supply the Viaur and the Aveyron. Like Villeneuve-d'Aveyron and Naucelle, Rieupeyroux's origin is a sauveté (salvita) dating from the Romanesque era. The hamlet spontaneously developed around a church and a Benedictine monastery founded by the abeey Saint-Martial de Limoges on former seugnerial land. The sauveté, whose limits were defined by fortifications built at the very start of the Hundred Years war has an almost orthogonal map. The central part of the urban frame is occupied by a market square of modest size and installed on a steep hill. The regular plan of the sauvete and the almost central location of its place announce what will become a rule in the bastides of the 13th and 14th century.

Eglise Saint Martial

Rieupeyroux (from rivo petroso, or stony river ), is situated in the granite and schist landscape of the Ségala, where vast open plateaux are cut by numerous valleys whose rivers run into the Aveyron or the Viaur. According to legend, the giant Gargantua once roamed here.

The original centre dates from 1030 and was a sauveté (place of refuge), founded by the powerful Benedictine abbey of Saint-Martial de Limoges on the ancient seigniorial lands of the Ségala.

Here youll still find the traditional gridiron layout of a bastide, with several vestiges of the middle ages, like the timber framed -houses, the arcades in the Place du Gitat and the Griffoul fountain.

Beautiful 11th and 12th century abbey-church. Three periods of works mark the construction of the church in Nant: the first was the apse, the apsidoles and the transept, the second was the nave, the third was the western masonry work. The study of the architecture shows the history of the works from the east to the west. Starting with the oldest part, around 1070, (the chevet and the transept), and after an interruption of a short time, the nave walls were built in 1080-1090. Then the construction of the western masonry work and the vaults in the nave, after 1140-1150. (Anne-Marie Pécheur).

Bastide épiscopale de La Bastide l'Eveque

Founded in 1280 by Bishop (Evêque) Raymond de Calmont, La Bastide was built on a granite plateau overlooking the Aveyron gorges, where copper was worked in water powered forges (martinets). The village is full of character and has retained the traditional layout of a bastide (fortified walled town): parallel streets crossed at right angles by lanes (carreirous). The church of Saint John the Baptist, with its bell tower in pink granite dominates the central square.

Amateur historians will be astonished by the diversity and richness of the built heritage: nearby you'll find the “martinet” de la Ramonde, Chateau de Requista (private), the Gallo-Roman bridge at Cayla and four churches, all bearing witness to man's activity and ingenuity over the years. There are several clearly marked walks so you can take full advantage of this special environment.

The locals are well known for their hospitality. They get together throughout the year at traditional summer fêtes, during the Bastide Festival, at the Martinet night market or the producers' markets. They are just waiting to share all this with you.

Tayrac

This charming village was once a 13th century bastide, surrounded by walls and ditches, at the time a dependency of the lordship of Castelmary, which itself was under the authority of the bishop of Rodez.

With the passage of time, agricultural activity moved up out of the valleys towards the plateaux and while the population of Castelmary slowly declined, that of Tayrac became more and more significant. The people were principally farmers, but there were numerous other trades in the village: blacksmith, weaver, clogmaker, wheelwright, tinsmith, joiner, tailor, dressmaker………..

Even if situated some way from the main highways, Tayrac has an ideal situation. At 400-500 metres altitude, it lies midway between Rodez and Albi, at the frontier between the Aveyron and the Tarn, between the Massif Central and the plains of Toulouse.

Today Tayrac has rediscovered its positive dynamism, maintaining its lively agricultural tradition while attracting new inhabitants, searching for a real quality of life.

Le Martinet de la Ramonde

The copper foundries of La Bastide l'Evêque existed in the 14th century and stopped working in the 19th century. The name "martinet" refers to the water powered hammer used in the foundry. Here, copper was beaten out into "coupes noires" (black cups) which were then sent to be finished elsewhere, including to coppersmiths in Villefranche. Today, the Ramonde foundry has been brought back to life by the Martinet Association.

Vabre - Tizac

Vabre-Tizac is a grouping of two villages and three parishes, lying at an altitude of - 200 to 800 metres between the Aveyron and Viaur valleys. From the village hall in Vabre you can take a walk to discover the contrasting landscapes of hidden wooded valleys and high plateaux.

Vabre is a former fortified village of houses set one against the other. The fortified gate beside the Mairie contains elements dating back to the 13th century.

Tizac, the name of which ends in “-ac” (a field), shows traces of the Roman occupation of Gaul.

At Bleyssol there is a beautiful 15th century stone cross, listed as a historic monument and bearing the arms of the powerful Morlhon family, the last remnant of the former priory of Saint Clair

Village de Nant

Station Verte de Vacances

Between Causses and Cévennes, the village of Nant nestles in the heart of a green valley at the confluence of two rivers: the Dourbie and the Durzon. From the 10th century, Benedictine monks drained this marshy site by creating a network of channels that still run through the village and have meant that Nant is called "the garden of the Aveyron". Until the suppression of the abbey by royal decree in 1777, life in the village was organised around monastic life whose irrigation work enables the agricultural boom. The richness of the local heritage merits more than just a brief stop: 11th and 12th century abbey-church of Saint Pierre, the 14th century church of Saint Jacques, the 17th and 18th century Penitents' chapel, the Mairie, the Halle and the Roc Nantais, the 14th century La Prade bridge.

St- Salvadou

Saint-Salvadou became part of the new Bas-Ségala commune in 2016 and you'll find lots to see here. The Sérene rivers snake through the wooded countryside studded with stone houses and farms covered in lauzes, the traditional stone « slates ». The houses in the village centre cluster around the tall belltower of the beautiful neo-gothic church. The village has a “one flower” award and you'll see this in the abundant planting in the village's many squares, nooks and crannies.

Three poets were born here, all of whom wrote of their roots: Justin Bessou, a colleague and friend of Fréderic Mistral, Henri de Lestang and André Pradel. - Discover these roots yourself by meandering along the country walks in the footsteps of the Lords who founded this « sauveté » in the 11th century, of the monks of La Chaise-Dieu and of the « Croquants » who, 500 years later, risked their lives to defend their property. Also don't forget the « Fairy Fountain » a shrine of mystery and legend since the dawn of time.

Tourists will find a general store and a tennis court in the village, B&-Bs, a waterside campsite and a restaurant. The village is currently being equipped with free audio guides to help you better understand its history and heritage.
