Des gorges de la Dourbie au plateau du Larzac

From the Gorges de la Dourbie to the Larzac plateau

The circuit

The wonder starts as soon as you begin the tour by discovering this majestic structure crossing the Tarn valley - the Millau viaduct. Marvel at this technological gem and why not take a break in this decidedly southern looking town. You will be able to visit its famous glove makers and leather tanners and preparers, before adventuring into the rocky chaos of Montpellier-le-Vieux.

Not far from there, the Gorges de la Dourbie and its canyon will lead you to la Roque-Sainte-Marguerite, Nant or St-Jean-de-Bruel. Change of period and setting!

Driving further south, stop off at La Couvertoirade*, the most famous of the listed Knights Templar villages, established on the edge of the Causse du Larzac. This little marvel of the mediaeval period will delight you with its sentinel walkway and its still intact ramparts. Continue through history visiting the Knights Templar commandry of Sainte Eulalie de Cernon.

Reaching the village of Viala-Pas-de-Jaux where an imposing granary stands that looks very much like a Dungeon, enjoy the 360° view across to the Cévennes and Mont Aigoual.

Lastly, finish the Knights Templar history tour by visiting the village of St Jean-d’Alcas with its four corner towers.
